While I technically finished this dress is 2024, I was distracted by holiday shenanigans in the sewing room, including Archie's Winter wardrobe, and I didn't manage to post the finished pictures of the dress in a timely fashion.
This was one of those projects that I was very excited about to begin with, found I really didn't have enough of my vintage fabric remnant to make the darn thing, came up with a solution, second guessed myself a ton with my solution, found a coordinating fabric that I thought would work, decided that print was just too much for the over-the-top print of the dress, miraculously found another coordinating fabric option, loved my choice, stitched everything together and began to second guess my choice, finished the dress, ended up loving how loud my fabric choices are.
Which is to say, sometimes things are meant to work out and you just have to trust the process.
In fact, I had so much fun with this pattern, I thought about making a Christmas themed version (because I think the collar is suitably festive). But since I had just finished this version, I wanted to try something else, and I had made my Christmas project plans months earlier, so I thought that I would stick to it.
I shortened the hemline of the design significantly due to yardage constraints, and I am very glad that it turned out like this. I think that the knee length works in the illustration, but with such a bold print, this really screams 1960s mini to me and I wanted to lean into that silhouette.
Also, I am not a mini skirt kind of gal UNLESS I can wear a pair of tights. I used to wear tights all Winter long, even under long skirts, and at some point, I stopped. But seeing as I have quite the collection in my dresser drawer, I should make use of them.
These particular tights were purchased last year and I never got around to wearing them. While searching for something that would work with this dress, I came across the unopened package and realized the color is an exact match to one of the leaf motifs in the dress print.
While this project was a bit of a wild ride, I am very pleased with how it turned out.
It just proves, once again, that vintage patterns cannot be beat! And vintage textiles aren't too shabby, either!!
Those are some loud tights! I would be too timid to wear them, but they look great with this vintage material. I really like the vintage print! The hydrangeas draw me in. I love hydrangeas with these colors.
