Periwinkle Paired with Shades of Blue
Well, it's March 1st, so this coat should be perfectly weather appropriate. But wait . . . I wore a sundress to work two days ago, so no, February in the Bay Area no longer requires wool outerwear, or so it seems. And although it has cooled down slightly to a high of 60 degrees, I still don't see myself wearing a heavy wool coat anytime soon.
This is one of the projects that I actually completed last year, but never got around to posting photos on the blog.
I had wanted to make a version of this Vintage Vogue reproduction for years. I even started making a pink version probably 10+ years back which turned out to be a questionable fabric choice, and I just didn't have the heart to finish it.
And then this periwinkle colored wool showed up in my life. It is also probably not the perfect choice for this garment (it could use a little more drape and maybe a little less weight), but I do love it.
I have a habit of making coats that don't match a whole lot of clothing options in my wardrobe, and just when I was afraid that this would become yet another, I remembered this 1940s reproduction that I made back in 2010.
Which happens to be a perfect match for my coat.
And it gave me a reason to pull out my favorite snood.
I have stepped away from the 1940s silhouette a bit, but I think I need to revisit the era. Because there are some fabulous silhouettes to be found with amazing details that I look for in my sewing projects.
And now I have the perfect top layer!

So pretty! The color is perfect, as is the sewing.
ReplyDeleteThe snood showed up; I finally can get some rest.
ReplyDeleteYour coat collection is impressive.
Wearing a dress from 10 years ago, and it fits...ya know that's gettin' me started. I think I need an Ativan.
Poor Testosterone, I really hope we meet one day. Not sure Ativan is the appropriate choice for weight gain, but it does have less calories than vodka. The coat is very nice, from the photos it appears to drape quite well. O
ReplyDeleteBarbara Showell,
DeleteAre you ever going to an MPB Day (it's a very quirky convention - though nobody calls it that)? We could meet up, conduct our own coffee klatch after Panera, on the sidewalks of NYC.
While I have a paunch, the fact that Laura Mae can fit in that dress was actually precipitating a rant, not a diet (though I am contemplating one). Time wears upon my physique, meanwhile Laura Mae and that mother of hers [SFX: nasal exhale] show no signs of "in-fill" - they sport the same waistlines ad nauseam! Theories as to how they do this range from elixirs to the occult.
Meanwhile, I'm hoping to return to slab sides - concave curves do not become me (not that one is trying to compete with Laura Mae; one is petty, not foolish).
I love reading your posts and seeing what you've created. I bet your co-workers wait with baited breath every week to see what gorgeous outfit you're wearing!
ReplyDeleteI love the color of your coat as it is not the usual neutral color we tend to choose for a winter coat (gray, black, beige). It is cheerful and will likely go with more colors and prints than you expected.
ReplyDeleteI can even see it worn with a little black dress with silver beading or sequins for a party dress. Don't you have a ribbon skirt that might work paired with a blouse or sweater in off white?
Dusty rose or ballet pink would be gorgeous with your beautiful couture coat. By matching the tone you could pair it with yellow, lavender, mint green solid dresses in Ponte or wool knit, making it ideal for a winter vacation as one coat would be all you would need.
Was just browsing Etsy, and came across a vintage pattern shop you might like. TVPstore is their handle. Dreamy stuff.... sigh.
ReplyDelete(No, not affiliated... just thought of you.)
Hey, Laura Mae! It's been awhile, thinking of you. Presumably you're making the best of enforced quiet creative time, but let us know how you're holding up! Your blog is one of the bright points of the internet. May God bless you and tenderly keep you. <3
