This is definitely a different silhouette for me - but every once in a while, I feel like I need to try something new.
This was one of those projects.
And while I was concerned that this particular creative endeavor was going to be a fail at the half-way point, I am glad that I powered through. Because I really enjoyed wearing the dress!
Sure, I had a snarky comment from my boss, but that was to be expected. He rags on my clothing choices, and I raise my eyebrow at his.
Surprisingly enough, I had quite a few positive comments from strangers, most of whom were male. Perhaps they thought I was with child and were afraid to ask?
I am going to end up calling this one a success. Phew! I really did not want to have to scrap this fabric!
There is a distinct possibility that I will make that wool version to be a match back to my original inspiration. That may not happen anytime soon, but the Trapeze silhouette is beginning to grow on me!

Now I want one as well. But maybe without the big bow.
ReplyDeleteAsks also where I can acquire a similar pattern.
ReplyDeleteWell, it does have a matronly air, especially with the bow, but you are slim and can carry it off. My dear mother would have happily worn such a dress back in the day and she loved prints and this is a pretty one.

Laura Mae,
ReplyDeleteAnother silhouette under you bow, if not your belt.
Very much looking forward to your year in review.

I really like this dress on you as well as the reviews and comments from observers. It looks wonderful on you and gives that feeling of the late 50's -60's just as well as the form fit full skirt dresses. I'm encouraged to give this a try. Keep sewing!
ReplyDeleteVery very pretty!
ReplyDeleteAnd extremely well done, as usual.
Laura—
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the detailed, precise work you do, but I have to say that this dress is the spitting image of a '50s maternity outfit. With that big bow, there is no getting around it.
Paloverde
My mother made a similar dress for me around 1963/1964 -- loved that dress as it was a very deep but bright pink. However, my dress and others at that time were made of a much heavier weight material than your dress appears to be so that our dresses maintained a very definite trapeze shape rather than the softened shape of your dress.
ReplyDeleteYour material choice for this dress is beautiful and I think your idea of making this in wool is a good one. Can't wait to see how that one turns out!
This is stunning! The print, the shape, the bow! Beautiful xo
ReplyDeleteI'm with Paloverde, the shape and the bow read to me as Retro Maternity. I do like the fabric but prefer you (and me!) in gowns with waist definition.
ReplyDeleteI"m saying this as a woman with a very obvious potbelly that gets the "when are you due?" question all-the-time. The bow does make it look like vintage maternity.
ReplyDeleteBut I love the dress, itself. It is an unexpected silhouette for you and you wear it well. I'd maybe take the bow off if you find yourself fending off rude questions?? But do keep the dress - it's lovely! If it were mine, I'd open the front and add buttons to make a fun spring jacket, as I love a trapeze silhouette for coats and the vintage charm is an added bonus.
