It feels like I have not posted here in months, but I am slowly getting back in the swing of things. I have not touched a sewing machine in almost three weeks (which feels bizarre), but there has been some knitting and hand sewing. One of these days I will cut into a new pattern, and who knows, it may be one of these . . .

The Holiday Butterick Collection has something for everyone,
including some new vintage reproductions. And they actually have some interesting style lines! Now if only those hats were included, I would be a very happy girl. It has been far too long since there has been a vintage hat pattern released. Hint, hint!

The sewn version of this suit is very unfortunate looking on the model,
but with proper fitting and some tailoring, I think it has some real possibilities. Of course, finding three suitable fabrics might prove to be
a challenge.

This dress reminds me of Vintage Vogue 9127 but with a
little less finesse. The upper pockets
throw off the proportions for me, but this one has potential as well.

The Gertie dress reminds me of this Butterick pattern, although this one has cut-in-one sleeves and I think I spy gussets in
the line drawing.
I am pleased to see some new Retro patterns from Simplicity
as well. I love the dress, although it is a massive fabric hog. Then again, most of my favorite silhouettes are as well.
The 1970s skirt is cute, although nothing jaw dropping. But since I cannot recall having a button front gored skirt in my pattern stash, I am probably going to add this one to my collection.
These designs are slightly more complicated and interesting
than the recent 1960s sun dresses that were released this past year, so
hopefully Simplicity will continue to search their archives for more interesting styles.
What I will not be able to handle is a Retro pattern from the
1980s, although I suppose it may come to
that soon enough. Yikes!
Butterick 6286 – a similar suit, with more stripes was seen on last week's Good Wife. A narrow stripe, 2-1/2 - 3" wide was situated above the pale grey band and then a stripe of about the same width was at the waist. If I remember the sequence from the top, it was black, orange, caramel, white, black with a black skirt. Looked to be made of satin wool or mohair. Stunning. The sleeves were also striped in the same proportions. I don't usually buy vintage patterns but I may have to buy that one.

Those diagonal panels must have been a major fashion trend back in the mid 1960's. Earlier this year I made this dress using a pattern from a Dutch sewing magazine from 1966: http://petitmainsauvage.blogspot.nl/2015/08/1966.html
ReplyDeleteIt is not the same dress: The necklines are different, Marion magazine added a bow to the point where the panels meet and the Simplicity dress might be a bit more fitted (hard to judge from drawings) but there is clearly one idea behind both designs.
8019 was a great pattern, one of my early makes in the 70s and still in my collection.

ReplyDeleteI really like 6286 and might give it a go, wonder if I would wear it though.
ReplyDelete6286 is very interesting, I will love to see some of them. Also the 70s skirt, I think it's perfect for daily wear (same as 60s dress) and I don't have a front buttoned one, so I may go for this one.
ReplyDeleteHope to see some of the new patterns sewn by you!
Closing in on nearly four weeks without a post - you were missed somethin' fierce.
ReplyDeleteGlad you're back Laura Mae!
I like Butterick 6286, nice suit! I like the gored buttoned skirt too. But nothing else really grabs me. I'm glad you are back too! I have been a lurker for a while, but am doing a blog comment challenge 300 in 30 days, so that's why I am commenting now.
ReplyDeleteI made that sixties cape, the long one, from that pattern. It was in a pink boucle and part of my Easter ensemble. Thanks for the memory jog.
ReplyDeleteI really like simplicity 8013 it looks a little like the McCall's Laura Ashley pattern 7242 that was recently released but that we can't get in Australia but I like this one better. I agree about the very unfortunate look of the sewn version of B6286. So frumpy. It's a little odd but I think your version would be great if you could find the fabric for it.
ReplyDeleteThe Buttericks are slaying me, especially the first one that you shared here. Giant 40s fashion swoon! :)
ReplyDeleteHave a fabulous Halloween weekend, dear gal!

If you haven't seen "A Single Man", or it has been a while, there is a similar dress to Simplicity 1012, version B.
ReplyDeleteBelow is a link to images of Julianne Moore in that movie (or you can Google, "Julianne Moore Single Man images". It may be inspirational.
