have been all about Cinderella’s pretty, pretty princess dresses. And they are gorgeous - which is no real surprise. Sandy Powell is responsible for some amazing costumes . . . Far From Heaven, The Wings of the Dove, Shakespeare in Love (except for the fact that I cannot get over that Oscar ridiculousness - Cate
Blanchett was ROBBED!).
Speaking of Cate Blanchett - look at these dresses!! Hello, Ceil Chapman! I want/need to play dress up in this world.
There is definitely a 1940s and 1950s flavor thrown into the mix, which I love - shocker, I know!
I rarely go to the movies, but I may just
have to see this visual feast on the big screen.
And I have to admit that the stepsisters costumes
are pretty great, too. How did they make those cage crinolines?!

These pieces are pure fantasy. And the colors are brilliant! Why do I suddenly feel the need to go watch some old Technicolor movies?

ReplyDeleteYou know, those crinolines, there's a possibility they were 3D printed? Or just wire. But I like the idea of 3D printing more ;-D
My first thought was 3D printing, as well. But that means they are made of plastic, right? So it seems like sitting down would destroy the cage. And I wonder if these are just for show, or they are also worn under the ball gowns. I am thinking the answer is “no” but I would love to see more! No matter . . . they are still fabulous!!
DeleteWhy couldn't it be 3D printing, by now you can print with nearly any material, even cookie dough, so maybe the crinolines are made of silikon or light weight metal, but whatever it's made of, it looks fantastic, everything is just stunning, I love the the Cinderella story and love live action fairy tales, but I somehow wasn't looking forward to seeing this movie, but Cate Blanchett's outfits, my my, the colour, the shapes and the stepsister dresses, gosh, I want them dresses, maybe I'll have a teensy tiny look at the film, just for the costumes and Cate Blanchett
DeleteI saw it yesterday, and you should definitely go. Cate Blanchett's costumes are incredible, and the crinoline in the ballgown Cinderella wears should get its own Oscar. Also, toward the end of the movie, when the Stepmother is in debt, she re-wears her costumes from an earlier time, but they look very subtly old (the velvet's crushed etc.). Worth seeing!

DeleteThe great part is, we all know the story of Cinderella (and really I think it's pretty boring most of the time) so we can concentrate on the outfits without missing any plot!

ReplyDeleteDitto. I have a Cinderella problem (and know too many Disney princess girls - grrrr) but I stop and watch the ubiquitous trailer for CATE!!!!! Dangnation! And this just puts it over the top. Cheap matinee ho!

ReplyDeleteA very exciting prospect. What a fine array of greens, pharmacy bottle, acid yellow/greens too, you rarely see that much of it in one place. It's one of my favourite colours, but it's clearly the colour of "baddies". Never mind, I am still excited.
ReplyDeleteI saw the ballet at Lincoln Center in NYC but the costumes did not hold a candle to these stunning works of art. Obviously, theatre cannot afford this level of extravagance but thankfully the cinema can.
