The Power of Suggestion

I happened upon this amazing Dior creation while messing about on Pinterest the other day.  And the first thing I thought of was Scarlett O’Hara.

To be fair, I have Gone with the Wind on the brain because I am currently re-reading it for the fourth or fifth time.

But there is a striking resemblance between the Dior and the infamous “curtain” dress.  And this amazing dressing gown.

Would I have thought this had I not been reading about Miss Scarlett’s adventures?  I cannot say.  All I know is that I am dreaming of hoop skirts and luscious velvet!

  1. These are gorgeous! I saw (one version of) Scarlett's "curtain" dress when I was a kid. It was awesome. I think the dressing gown is actually my favorite of these. It reminds me a lot of the garments in Pre-Raphaelite paintings. And more especially of Ellen Terry's crocheted beetle-wing dress.

I have been reading your blog for a couple of years now, and really enjoy it. I hope to have even half of your sewing skill someday.

    1. The gown looks very Pre-Raphaelite - especially with the faded color tones! Which is probably one of the reasons I was so obsessed with it in high school!

  2. There is a version of Gone with The Wind on Youtube. Carol Burnett's costume designer came up with the idea for her costume. They kept it under wraps till they were filming live. Apparently it is still the longest live studio audience laugh at 2 solid minutes.
The clip is called "went with the wind". The costume supposedly took an entire week to make..... and it is without a doubt a showstopper.

  3. There really is a distinct parallel to the extent where one really has to wonder if it could be pure coincidence. Marvelous spotting, dear gal. I shall never see one without thinking of the other again.

  4. I can only say that as I began looking at this post, and saw that Dior photo first thing, my first thought was Scarlett O'Hara and the drapery gown. Thank you also for the images of that dressing gown -- truly gorgeous.
