A Mad Tea-Party

With all of my Gala Gown preparation, I did not find the time to make myself a new Halloween costume this year.  But I do have a closet that contains a few costume options . . .

I decided to dress up as Alice (the Disney version).

I made the dress about ten years ago and have not worn it since, so it was high time for a Halloween tea party!

I did not have my little guy back when I made the costume, so I spent Monday evening making him a suitable outfit.  I originally thought it would be fun to dress a dog as the Cheshire Cat, but did not have the necessary supplies on hand.

Instead, I went with the Mad Hatter, and used fabric remnants from the stash.

"Have you guessed the riddle yet?" the Hatter said, turning to Alice again.  "No, I give it up," Alice replied.  "What's the answer?"

"I haven't the slightest idea," said the Hatter.

You may recognize the polka dots from this dress and skirt; the cotton flannel was actually used for Tino’s Scarecrow costume; and the yellow quilting cotton was used as the lining for this dress.  The jacket is part of his Ricky Ricardo costume.  Make Do and Mend!

Projects like this do not help me get rid of my fabric scraps – it just confirms that the tiny piece of something I do not have the heart to throw away just might come in handy at some point in the future.

And it may be a bit off topic, but what is up with all of the slut-tastic costumes out there?  While braving the aisles of Party City for my wig, I could not help but notice that almost every costume is extremely short and low cut.

When did all of this happen?!  I absolutely refuse to play along.  So while I will not fit in the little girl princess costumes (although some of them are also on the risqué side - WHAT?!?), I can make my own!

Dress:  Made by me, self-drafted
Pinafore:  Paper White

Tino’s Jacket:  Borrowed from his Ricky Ricardo costume
Tino's Hat and Ascot:  Made by me, Simplicity 2740

  1. Laura, you're so prim and proper, seeing you write "slutastic" is hilarious.

I considered Alice this year as well! And Dorothy, after seeing the SF symphony perform wizard of Oz live to the movie a few months ago. In the end, I settled on Mary Poppins after seeing an ad for the show on the side of a bus in San Jo.

Alas, time got away from me. I settled on just a Kermit hat :(

    1. Mary Poppins is a fantastic Halloween idea - I am going to have to remember that!

I do wish there were more than 24 hours in a day! Although I am sure we would manage to fill the time, no matter how much of it we have.

  3. It KILLS me that you dress your dog up every year to match your costume. So freakin' cute!! And he clearly looks delighted to be part of the circle of attention :D

I think we've reached the point now where you pretty much can't find a commercial women's costume that isn't scandalous. I do think it's pretty tacky, although I get a kick out of slutty costumes that shouldn't be slutty (I seriously considered dressing as a slutty Bill Lumbergh before I decided not to celebrate this year hahaha). And it's sad, because it's starting to trickle down and affect the kid's costumes as well D:

  4. You are both too tremendously darling for words! Amazing costumes - you really do look as though you just hopped out of Wonderland.

  5. Who can resist a small dog in costume. I love it. My daughter and friends had an Alice theme this year. She went as cheshire cat that I made. It was OK, but not the greatest costume. I always have great ideas, but they don't always materialize for the big day.
    Thanks for sharing your fun.

  6. fantastic costume, and the dog is so cute. By the way - you look good as a blonde, I think you should consider a Jean Harlow bias cut gown with accompanying blonde hair, you could pull off that look. both the wig and the bias fabric sewing :)

Halloween is not really popular here in FRANCE but for the second time in my life, I choose to dress up for a scary Halloween party... my costume was close to yours... you can see it there: http://lostin1950.blogspot.fr/2012/11/halloween-somewhere-over-rainbow.html

  9. You and Tino look adorable. He's a very good model. My chi always seems to move or turn away just as I'm snaping the picture. And I agree-too many slutty costumes out there. But then again, some people don't know how to dress in everyday life.
