Thrift Store Score!

I think I am going to have to make thrift store shopping a priority.  Because this is the result.

Now, do I NEED any more clothes?  Absolutely not!  My closets are full.

I take that back - if I choose to take up rock climbing, I will not have any appropriate clothing and will have to go on a major shopping spree.  But I will admit that the chances of that happening are pretty slim.  Just in case, does anyone know where to find crampons that would fit a cute peep toe pump?

So why are there days when I stare at my stuffed to the gills closet and see absolutely nothing that I want to wear!?  Does anyone else have this problem?

So, in honor of my resolution to attempt some projects using knit fabrics this year, I decided to give this dress a try.  That, and it reminds me of Donna Karan’s “cold shoulder” dresses (after the release of the new Vogue patterns she is very much on my mind).  Does that woman know how drape fabric or what!

My one complaint is that it is made of polyester – something I try to avoid at all costs.  If only this new dress was made of silk or rayon jersey . . .  However, I just could not resist the style.

So there you have it, another treasure from Goodwill.  If only I did not have a pesky job and could explore thrift stores and estate sales all day long!

  1. Not really. :) My husband and I share a small closet and it fits everything we both own, except for our coats. I barely own any clothes by your average blogger's standards, but I always have something to wear. I think that maybe it's one of those "can't see the woods for all the trees" kind of deal. There are plenty of studies, after all, that show that people who have too many options are more likely not to make a choice at all.

That said, that's a beautiful dress and I love watching what you have in your brimming closet(s!), so the egoist in me is shouting "More! More!" :D

  2. I enjoy your posts so much. I am always delighted when I see an e-mail come through with your new post. I'm sure you will find an admirable purpose for your bursting closets one day. Outfitting a drama school for a play about fashion (of course you'll get everything back). Your own fashion show for ladies who dressed well in the 30's and 40's.Your excitement is infectious... So you are doing a useful, and wonderful thing. JL

  3. Great score on the dress. I am super impressed that you know what a crampon is (I had to look it up). I love thrift store shopping for sewing supplies, fabric, notions, patterns etc, my local stores don't have much in the way of pretty clothes.

  4. Laura Mae, that dress is GORGEOUS on you. Couldn't you always recreate it in a higher quality fabric (that's a rhetorical question -- I know you could)? What a fabulous find!

  5. That's beautiful! I wouldn't've been able to resist it either.

As to closets, here's the question---are they full of awesome, amazing stuff, or a lot of meh stuff interspersed with the gems you blog about (because everything you blog is astonishing)

If it's the latter, you can always try to weed out the meh and keep the awesome. But if you're one of those people I envy deeply, whose entire closets are full of awesome, well, I think you're just going to have to suck it up. ;) Good luck!

  6. Gorgeous! I will be waiting to buy the pattern from you! I have no doubt that you will not settle until you can reproduce it in a lovely natural fiber jersey. I want to make it in a plum color....

  7. Overheard Conversation #5:

"Now thrift stores aren't safe from her."
    "You know what this means?"
"Mmmm hmmm, full make-up when bargain hunting. Imagine running into HER without our faces on!"
"Not on my watch. Besides, we can match those sunglasses and up 'doo, and raise her a turned up collar."
"You know she's going to make a pattern from it, then find some vintage yardage at an estate sale, and lastly devastate us with a traffic stopping rendition."
"Ohhhh ya, and suffering that will require copious amounts of analgesics and sedatives."
"I swear my hair has thinned since we started visiting our smart shopper's blog."
"She wasn't crass enough to crow, but what do you think she paid for it?"
"Please, she clucked enough to let us all know it was a paupers pittance. Plus, non-verbally she boasted mercilessly, as every pose was 'hands on hips'."
    "Wow, you're fluent in "Laura-Mae".
"[in a haughty tone]Nonsense. [pause, and lowers voice] I speak 'woman'."

  8. Ooh that is a good score!
This actually could be quite good for rock-climbing - stretchy, lots of leg room, and no great shakes to the budget if you spear it with a crampon...!
